COVID-19 - The Response and Resources from OPEN
The 2020 pandemic forever changed the landscape of physical education worldwide. This session will highlight the resources in the Active Home module created by OPEN National Trainers to assist teachers with their transition to online teaching for grades K-12. Additionally, participants will dive into OPEN’s new PE NOW curriculum created to teach students face-to-face with social distancing, virtually, or with a blended model. PE NOW focuses on OPEN’s new Priority Learning Outcomes for Physical Education and social/emotional learning concepts based on CASEL core competencies. This workshop is designed for a grades K–12 audience.
The SEL/Physical Education Connection: Featuring Believe in You
Physical education standards integrating social and emotional learning (SEL) concepts have been in place since 1995. Additionally, physical education is one of the only content areas with SEL standards and learning outcomes embedded in our curriculum! Students, families, and teachers need extra support due to the trauma and events our society has experienced over the last year. This session will educate physical educators on what SEL is, the relationship between SEL and physical education, and what teachers can do to foster safe, empowering, and healing environments throughout their school communities. Connections to SEL from OPEN content and the Believe in You series featuring Kevin Atlas will be highlighted. This workshop is designed for a grades K–12 audience.
FitnessGram® in a COVID World
Many of today’s physical education classrooms feature both in person and virtual learners due to the pandemic. Teachers are faced with the dilemma of assessing virtual students with FitnessGram® while never seeing them face-to-face. Created in collaboration with The Cooper Institute®, this professional development takes teachers through solutions to utilizing fitness assessments in the online environment. Assessment solutions, equipment modification, links to resources that can be posted for student access, free OPEN resources that can assist, and more will be shared. This session is designed for any teacher using FitnessGram® with virtual students.
Building Brains and Bodies with Active Classrooms
Students need 60+ minutes of activity a day to keep healthy bodies. That physical activity also helps build their brains and prepares them for learning! Routine Brain Energizers, active indoor recess, and classroom-based physical activity can improve every student’s learning experience. OPEN’s Active Classroom resources will keep students moving and help teachers stay stress free. Teachers participating in this session will learn about the importance of activity to learning and how to implement Active Classroom activities into the school day to reap the benefits! Resources include an academic language component and social/emotional learning connections. This workshop is designed for the elementary classroom or physical education teacher.
Sport Education: Empowering Your Students to Success!
Participants will engage in techniques and methods to create innovative Sport Education seasons while teaching Face to Face with Social Distancing. Sport Education seasons promote physical literacy, while maximizing student participation, engagement, empowerment and leadership. Frameworks and examples will show Sport Education in action! This session will cover how the model can work with Social Distancing by incorporating OPEN content. This workshop is designed for a grades 4-12 physical education teacher audience.
Teaching Face-to-Face with Physical and Social Distancing
At some point this school year, everyone hopes to be back in a “regular” classroom with students. But what will that look like? There is no question that physical and social distancing will probably become the “new normal”. How do physical educators teach under these new expectations? What does this new physical education experience look like? Participants will learn how our new classrooms may function and ideas to integrate to keep students safe and learning our content this school year. This workshop is designed for a grades K–12 audience.
Using Social Media as a Professional Learning Network
Current COVID conditions make meeting regularly with colleagues difficult. Did you know social media can be used as a tool to expand your professional learning network? Fantastic ideas are shared daily across multiple platforms that can increase your teaching effectiveness, productivity, and communications! Participants will learn about three widely used platforms, potential benefits, pitfalls, and journey through some live examples of finding educational treasures! This session is designed for K-12 physical education or classroom teachers.
When Technology Meets Wood and Cement - How to Build a Virtual Classroom
Pick your preferred platform (Google Slides or PowerPoint) and let’s get building! Virtual classrooms have become a rage with the unexpected turn to online learning during COVID-19. This session will teach you how to create your own virtual classroom for students to access remotely. Participants will learn about integrating Bitmoji technology, inserting photos with links, and what can be shared inside your classroom. Time will be reserved at the conclusion for participants to start their classrooms with guidance from the presenter. This workshop is designed for a grades K–12 audience.
Pleased to Meet You! What's Your Name?
The new school year means a new group of students will be welcomed into your classroom! Or will they? This fall we may have to meet new Kindergarteners, middle school, or high school students virtually or from behind a mask. How does that look? This session will identify positive ways to meet and greet students to kick off a most unique school year whether you are on a screen or in person. This session is designed for a grades K-12 audience.
Technology Tools for Virtual or Face-to-Face Physical Education
School districts expect technology to be integrated into instructional practice for all subject areas, and many administrators incorporate the effective use of technology into teacher evaluations. Virtual and blended classes, along with transitioning lesson plans to learning management systems, has increased the need to integrate technology into physical education. This workshop provides a hands-on experience to help participants discover FREE technology tools that can help them deliver creative lessons focused on grade-level outcomes. Participants will also explore tools to enhance teacher-student-parent communication and increase teacher productivity. This workshop is designed for a grades K–12 audience.
Making an IMPACT Through Empowerment Journals (to support the Varsity Brands Empowerment Journals)
Varsity Brands and OPEN have collaborated on outcomes-based social and emotional learning journals for grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Students benefit when journals are used as a tool to improve group dynamics in classes or small groups, as a problem-solving tool, and to encourage emotional healing. Journals provide a safe place for children and adults to explore emotions, learn optimism, develop growth mindset, and take control of their goal-setting effort and success. The Empowerment Journals integrate CASEL core competencies and trauma informed instruction to support student and teacher safety, empowerment and healing in today’s unique situations. This session will explore the Empowerment Journal design and process to elevate the student/teacher experience for schools/districts purchasing the journals.
