I’ve been working with National Physical Education Standard 3 over the past few weeks, looking for ways to help elementary students meet the various grade level outcomes for Fitness Knowledge. When in doubt, begin with the outcomes. Actually, always begin with the outcomes.
Anyway, I wanted to create an activity that would accomplish the following:
- Provide examples of activities to enhance fitness (S3.E3.3)
- Help students identify and understand muscular endurance as a component of health-related fitness (S3.E3.4)
- Provide a way for students to demonstrate muscular endurance (S3.E5.3)
- Teach an activity that could become an easy-to-manage warm-up for more strenuous muscular fitness exercises and assessments (S3.E4.5)
I also wanted to ensure Academic Rigor and integrate a little bit of Mathematics, so, I created an exit slip/scorecard that would add an element of challenge for all students while also assessing Depth of Knowledge levels 1 and 2.
Let’s not stop there! The station cards are designed to help students develop and demonstrate Reading Comprehension while building their physical education vocabulary with the names of major muscles worked by each exercise. Add a basic anatomy poster to the gym, and your students will learn their muscles faster than the names and upgrades of the new Skylander characters.
In all seriousness, there’s a lot of great content packed into one set of station posters and a scorecard. I hope that you and your students enjoy them.
Work hard. Have fun.
